Well, everyones gotta start somewhere... I just found this Ning this evening and boy, I sure hope someone can help me! (I am sure you can...)
So, I have a URL hosted at 1&1 and now I want to ftp some stuff up to it... for example a WP blog.
I used to ftp over 10 years ago and it seems that I plum forgot how. (It was pretty easy then, but my problem right now is actually configuring the program to connect with the URL).
Anyone out there who can help? I am ready to launch with a bang (thanks to the "Black Book" 8) !) so I am kind of frustrated with this minor set-back...
I use filezilla for ftp (free from sourceforge) - and it works great - i can save the sites as connections so everytime I want to connect to it, just pick it from the drop down list. As for the specific thing to connect to with 1 and 1 - you would need to check at their support page or contact them.
For my sites - none of which are 1 and 1 - you just connect to the domain name.
I can only reply to how I upload to actual web sites I host at go daddy. (it must be similar to uploading wordpress I would think).
You DO have to have a log in for your particular url in order to upload, and you determine that with your provider.
I use a program called WebDrive. I love it. It's drop and drag and looks like a windows interface.
It sounds very similar to what Matt is using, except mine is a tree not a drop down.
I recently just started using this plugin that let's you bypass FTP. You don't even need to unzip the theme or the plugins you upload--does all that for you. I've put it on all my WP blogs.
Hope it's working out well for you so far -- you've got some good advice. You might also like to take a look at WPhosting.com -- there's an automatic set-up of WordPress when you order your hosting plan.
You guys are great. I have now got connection through the ftp program (using filezilla and it is just like I remember it being in the old days... easy, uncomplicated).
YET I am still frustrated. I am having trouble getting wp set up. Here is what I figure my problem to be: when I edit the config.php I must be putting in the wrong info.
What do I put in for my dbname?
How do I figure out what my MySQL username is? (and to state an obvious question, how do I figure out what my password is?)
How do I know if I need to change the setting for the "local host"?
What on earth do I type in for db prefixes? (It is set to < $table_prefix = 'wp '; >, what do I edit in at the 'wp' part, do I need to keep the "wp" letters in there, like wp_admin, does the wp program not create this prefix automatically?)
In the mean time I have loads of NEW POSTS ready to go... who can help me or direct me in the right path?
(Geepers, at least I have experience with a (dot)wordpress blog, so once I am set up I should be doing fine... and it really cannot be as difficult as I seem to be finding it -- the setup -- cause everywhere I look there are wp's on privately hosted blogs... there is hope, right?)

Ok, I figured all that stuff out above... which is good. Had to get another host which accomodates MySQL... now working on tweaking my theme and pumping content while working on networking to those in parallel branches...
