Social Marketing Central

Social Marketing Central!

Yesterday I expanded my friends list on Digg and then decided to write a blog post about it.

How to get more Diggs

Power users on Digg with large friends lists can post the same link as you do and go to the front page while you just get a few diggs.

It takes 51 Diggs in 24 hours to go to the front page, maybe.

Do not digg your own posts. Also when digging an article digg a few other links too. Digg may be finding your digg irrelevant if you only digg one link per session.

Way more in the article. If you have more insight I would love to hear it.

If you are on Digg add Chris Lang as your friend and I will friend you back.

Cheers - Chris Lang

If you did not already see this in this thread there is evidence that Digg gives more juice to submissions and Diggs from users not in your friends list.

I am not worried about that, I am using Digg to boost my SEO. WOW, I just thought of something. If Google only finds your item in Digg and not on Stumble, Delicious ect. that could be an indication of spam techniques.

Good god, it takes so much time to manage Digg what are you supposed to do if you have to be in how many other networks?

Maybe we can get Jack to weigh in here as I hear Jack Humphrey is a Digg god. Jack you are getting another message from Chris Lang. LOL

Read my latest post before you go crazy, there is some evidence that shouts are public and can hurt your original articles ranking. We will know shortly.

So Chris, I decided to blog about this too, it's great information. If you don't Digg your own articles, but need someone else to do it, what would you recommend?

Of course, making sure the information in the article is useful and informative helps, putting the standard syndication icons on your blog to make it easy to Digg helps and putting a RSS Feed up so readers can get the new articles straight to their inbox helps too.

However, it doesn't guarantee someone will Digg (or any other type of bookmark) your post.

What has your experience with this been?

My experience is that no one Diggs my posts from my site. I get others to submit them for me.

Then after it is submitted I then shout the item to my friends. The fact that I have my shouts set to private but they still show up in my public history tab concerns me.

The only way to find out is delete them all and see what happens to the Digg item in Google.

There is only 3 searches a month returned in a search traffic query for "how to get more diggs" so I am not worried about the item sinking in the SERP.

I am only leaving the shouts up for now so that you all can see them.

Tomorrow nite I will delete the shouts to one item and by Monday we will see what happens. That way we can track what happens when shouts are removed. Will Google find this a spammer tactic? Do you think this will make things worse?

It's an interesting hypothesis and I'm interested in the results. I'm really not certain what you should expect.

You mentioned in another post that you use a Web application to track your keywords etc, care to share what that is?

That is a real gem and I have 6 others like it in (can't mention products, I do it too much) but I gotta keep a few of my secrets under my hat or there would be no way for me to make a living. :} Contact me off SMC and we can talk.

Jack pointed out that I am a little too self promotional here so if I have offended anyone I apoligize. In other forums it is perfectly OK to use a sig file.

By now you all know who Chris Lang is and you know what I sell. I will refrain from blatant self promotion in the future. But don't you agree that I am providing valuable content here? If you have any feedback contact me off SMC.

Thanks for the link on the blog post BTW. Charly wrote a very good article on this thread on her blog.

Hey Chris, Thanks for the detailed comment too.

I like "The question that remains to be answered is this: Does Google find your shouts to your friends to be a negative indicator when the Digg item is from your site?"

This seems to be the crux of the discussion now. I agree, if Digg didn't want us to shout our posts, why give us the ability to...... unless its so we can share other interesting posts with our Digg friends that aren't our own.

Still interested.

Or how about if we shouted content linked to our own sites Digg dropped in a NoFollow tag into the Digg item. Let's not give them any ideas. Kevin Rose is watching with his iPhone blurred red eyes!

We will find out if shouts affect the parent posts ranking. I will be writing a new blog post with references to all this content tomorrow. If anyone else cares to do the same there is a ton of content here you can work off plus the new links Andy Beard added.

Just Don't submit it yourself, don't Digg it and don't shout it to your list and we can have a better understanding of what is going on. Target the term "how to get more diggs" and we can all easily watch the results. Who can rank higher and stay there longer. WOW this is fun.

I would certainly look for more recent reference articles

The Digg algos change frequently, and until very recently it was taking 200 to 250 Diggs sometimes for a top Digger to frontpage, but a lot depends on category, inertia, whether they are friends etc.

Oh and Digg generally hate marketing and SEO articles

On the SEO stuff, Google SERPs bounce around a lot - sometimes I drop out of Google totally for Social Power Linking, then the next day I am back to 1 and 2 again

Currently I am 1 and 11 on a US based search with personalized search off

(yeah I love teasing Jack about it)
